WORKSHOP Responding to Clay/ Ceramic: Reaction & Reconstruction

Responding to Clay/ Ceramic: Reaction & Reconstruction

Concept

Responding to Clay/Ceramic is a hands-on, explorative workshop that invites participants to experience the ‘process behind handmade tableware.’

Instead of focusing on producing a perfect piece, this session emphasizes reaction, experimentation, and creative exploration — reflecting how Bendang approaches ceramics in the studio and how the crowd response (in their creative way).

Participants will engage with different stages of the making process (they need to choose one), from forming to reconstructing broken and rejected pieces, learning to see beauty in imperfection.

Objectives

• Introduce participants to Bendang’s making process in a tangible, interactive way.

• Encourage creative responses to clay, broken forms, and rejected pieces.

• Showcase the complexity behind handmade tableware — from casting to experimentation.

• Foster appreciation for imperfection as part of the craft.

• Allow participants to personalize their exploration by bringing their own tools and materials.

Materials & Equipment Provided

 • Moulds and clay slip

• Broken ceramic pieces (pre-prepared)

• Rejected ceramic pieces with visible flaws

• Basic studio tools: sponges, cutters, brushes, carving tools, underglaze, etc

• Mats, aprons, protective sheets

What Participants Should Bring (Optional)

To encourage personal expression, participants are welcome to bring their own:

• Brushes or any type of paint

• Carving tools

• Decorative materials

• Any other creative tools they’d like to use

NOTE:
For Option 2 & 3, we encourage artists/ designers/ creative individuals to join and collaborate with us in this activity — to interpret their feelings or reactions through imperfect pieces/ reconstruct new forms from broken ones/ simply express themselves in any way they wish.

However, everyone is welcome to join and experience the process and emotions behind ceramic making.
